The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee that acts as a cushion between the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia). Each knee has two menisci — one on the inner side (medial meniscus) and one on the outer side (lateral meniscus). These structures are essential for smooth knee movement, stability, and protection of the joint cartilage.
Meniscus injuries are among the most common knee problems, especially in athletes and active individuals.
What is a Meniscus Tear?
Each knee has two menisci that play a key role in joint function. The medial meniscus, positioned on the inner side of the knee, is less flexible and therefore more commonly injured, while the lateral meniscus, located on the outer side, is more mobile and better able to adapt to movement. Both menisci are made of tough, rubbery cartilage that acts as a cushion between the bones. However, because this cartilage has a limited blood supply, its ability to heal after injury is reduced, making some tears slow to recover without proper treatment.
