Conventional Knee Replacement, also called Total Knee Replacement (TKR) or Total Knee Arthroplasty, is a well-established surgical procedure used to treat severe knee joint damage. Understanding the Knee Joint
The knee is one of the largest and most vital joints in the body, connecting the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), and patella (kneecap). However, in conditions such as arthritis, this cartilage gradually wears away, causing the bones to rub against each other. This leads to pain, swelling, stiffness, and difficulty in performing everyday activities like walking or climbing stairs. How Conventional Knee Replacement Works
In conventional surgery, the orthopedic surgeon uses manual instruments and alignment guides to prepare the bone and position the implant accurately. The procedure relies on the surgeon’s expertise, experience, and precision.
The damaged joint surfaces are replaced with:
- Metal components for the femur and tibia
- Medical-grade plastic insert that acts like cartilage
- Sometimes a plastic button is placed behind the kneecap
